Lakshmi Manasa Maddi Week 9 - My Dream Superpower

Lakshmi Manasa Maddi - Week 9: My Dream Superpower

Ever since I was a young child, I have always dreamed of becoming as fast as the fastest thunderbolt in history. Throughout my childhood, my boundless fascination towards fairy tales and Disney princesses has inspired a deep inner passion within me for wanting to be transported from one place to another faster than any other superpower in existence. While exploring possibilities to achieve this visionary dream, the concept of flight piqued my interest and presented me with the deeper purpose of exploring the lifestyles of animals capable of flight. Using light-weight structures similar to wings, which ultimately harnessed the anti-gravitational force of the Earth I envisioned myself as an eagle in my dreams soaring unimaginably close to the Sun.

I was entranced positioning myself in various methods of motion when in the course of the flight. I propelled myself upward with a sudden lift, followed by a backward drag that allowed me to thrust past the unforgiving gush of air blowing against my face. At times, I am disappointed to accept that the compelling force of gravity prevents humans from flying longer distances for longer, keeping our legs steady on the floor (Folkman). This would have been possible if humans were designed with hollow bones and a light frame structure, a feature that easily catches onto the air, thus allowing birds to fly off into mid-air (Folkman). The increased supply of oxygen would boost efficiency within our path of flight, conserving energy over a longer period of time. Alongside the ability to travel longer distances, a light frame structure would assist us in balancing ourselves properly (Folkman).

Although we may not completely attain the superpowers we idolize, I am still fascinated by the creativity incorporated within this and the connections I was able to make between the real world when developing such thoughts. As any ordinary high school girl, I also cherish my dreams, in which I can achieve the practically impossible. While we may underestimate the potential of our mind at times, the human body, despite its intricate processing system, has several powers driven by our imagination.

  1. Hi Manasa! When I was young, I also was fascinated with super speed because I thought it was really interesting that you can time travel if you were fast enough. Even nowadays, every time before I go on an airplane, I wish I could teleport because I absolutely detest plane rides and feel so fatigued after. I've also dreamt of flying before, but in my dreams there was no physics involved at all and it was more like superman where I could just effortlessly move through the air at will. I didn't know that the reason birds could fly was because of their bone structure, despite birds being my favorite animal.

  2. Hi Manasa! When I was little, I was also obsessed with having superpowers. I really wanted to have super speed, mostly because I used to be a huge fan of the Flash (the TV series). Just like you, I was also quite disappointed to learn from a random Youtube video I saw a while back that there were a variety of physical barriers that prevented people from having superpowers. Apparently, if you could run at the speed of light, you would be moving faster than the speed at which your eyes could see, effectively leaving you running blind. Also, the air resistance and airborne particles you’re running into is apparently deadly because they’re colliding with you at super speeds. Although, I suppose it’ll always be fun to dream about all the possibilities that come with having super powers.

  3. Hi Manasa, I was also very interested in a variety of super powers growing up, and even now I consider how much easier my life would be if I had abilities like telekinesis or super speed. Telekinesis would be so convenient as I could just do things without having to physically do them, like laundry, or even write notes. Super speed would be nice as I could be so much more efficient and travel so much quicker, essentially making my commute time to school so negligible that I could sleep in for longer. However, these powers simply don't exist, though they would massively better my life. Unfortunately, I don't think there's any real plausible way for telekinesis to emerge as an ability, but I'll still think about how convenient and fun it would be from time to time.

  4. Hi Manasa, like you, I always dreamed of having super speed as a kid but that was probably because I was huge fan of the Flash. I used to imagine scenarios where I would tell my friends that I actually had super powers, and I would show it off. I think more than the actual superpowers, I always loved the close community that superhero shows and movies portrayed, and I always wanted that. As I've grown up, I obviously lost my dream of superpowers, but I still think I want that close community. Thank you for allowing me to reflect on this, and I look forward to your next post!

  5. Wow, I am very impressed by your writing style and artistic language. Your language is honestly really captivating and powerful. I really like how you were able to describe your dream of being able to fly with such vivid metaphors and imagery. I also really liked the content of your blog. I think that at some point in our lives, we have all imagined what it would be like to have a superpower. Personally, if I could have any one superpower, it would definitely be teleportation, because I love traveling, and if I had that power, I could explore the world without having to worry about transportation. I think flying would be another superpower that I would love to have. I did not know the science about what allows birds to fly, so that was also really interesting to learn about. I also believe that being fascinated with the impossible is really powerful, because it is only when we imagine the impossible, that we make new innovations and discoveries. If you think about it, before airplanes were created, people must have thought that it would be impossible to travel through the air in any form, but thanks to the Wright Brothers and other innovators, airplanes were created. Maybe one day, someone will create some sort of artificial motor-powered attachable wings that can help humans experience flying. The possibilities are endless only if we let our imagination run free.

  6. Hi Manasa! Your blog was really amazing. I absolutely love how creatively you described the feeling of flight. When I was younger I also dreamed of being a "Supergirl" and flying around and saving people. Towards middle school I was really into drawing and creating original characters and one of mine had psychic powers one of which included flying. Her skillset reminded me a lot of the Scarlet Witch (come to think of it maybe that was my inspiration). One other power I've always liked is the notion of making things appear out of thin air. Teleportation also comes to mind when I think of my character's powers. It's really silly but I do enjoy thinking about it to this day.

  7. I loved the content of your blog and the extremely vivid language you used in its writing. The fact of the matter is that dream that may seem childish before may one day be accomplished by science, and those dreams, the possibility of being able to travel as fast as Superman, or perhaps climb up walls like Spiderman, are often motivating factors for a newer generation. I have always dreamed of many of the superpowers you described in your blog, from the super speed to the ability to fly like a bird at will. I always wished I could be those characters, and I still do today. Maybe in the future I will get the opportunity to do so.

  8. Hi Manasa, I liked your blog post. I find it interesting how you said that having a dream superpower helped you make connections with the real world. If I could have a superpower, I would want it to be superspeed. If I had superspeed then I could do my homework really quickly and do better on our timed writes. Also I would be able to do anything I wanted to for a longer period of time. If I played video games for an hour, it would technically be like playing for 15 hours cuz I am fifteen times faster than normal. If my normal lifespan was 80 years, then with superspeed I would be living for 1200 years in my perspective.
